Les études consacrées depuis un siècle et demi à la Sîra ont souvent conduit à une dévaluation de la valeur historique reconnue à cette source. Le discrédit qui frappe la tradition textuelle qui se rattache au nom d’Ibn Ishâq (mort vers 151h/768m) s’accompagne d’une affirmation du Coran comme seul document permettant d’accéder à l’islam des origines. Or, si le Coran renvoie fréquemment à son contexte premier d’énonciation, il n’a pas pour objet de relater ces événements. En examinant le traitement qu’Ibn Ishâq a réservé aux données scripturaires de la période médinoise, on découvre qu’il a mis en œuvre une méthode d’enquête historique dont les résultats modifient la notion coranique de révélation.

Over the last century and a half studies in the Sîra have often lead to a devaluation of its historical value. The discredit that affects the textual tradition ascribed to Ibn Ishâq (d. 151 a. h./768 a. d.) is coupled with the assertion that the Koran is the only primary source for the study of the earliest period of Islamic history. Though the Koran makes frequent reference to its initial context of enunciation, its object is not to relate these events. An examination of the treatment that Ibn Ishâq gives to scriptural data from the Medinesse period shows that he developed a method of historical inquiry the results of which modify the concept of revelation as it is found in the Koran.

The Letter to the duchess of Bar, the sister of Henry IV, was written to support her when she was tempted to convert to Catholicism, but it is also addressed to all coreligionists and to posterity. Using a hybrid form, d’Aubigné mixes different literary genres, from a letter to a theological treatise, from a historical testimony to a page of historiography for the princess, and he appeals to several senses in order to influence the wider readership. Since he dealt with both a personal and an exceptional situation, in comparison with contemporary writings this friend of Catherine de Bourbon originally engages in an essential struggle of his time.

Without misjudging the order of reason and politics, the hyperbolic development of ethics as initiated by Levinas allows us to rethink the freedom of the subject and to rediscover the amazement from which philosophy originates.
