Le luthéranisme du 17^e siècle a repris certaines traditions mystiques médiévales ; ce fait a reçu des interprétations diverses. La première partie de cette étude en propose quelques explications : la réédition d’auteurs mystiques médiévaux tout au long du 16^e siècle, y compris dans l’espace luthérien ; une crise de la piété, dans le luthéranisme, à la fin du 16^e siècle ; des prédispositions particulières du luthéranisme pour la mystique. La seconde partie présente la démarche de quelques auteurs clés (Martin Moller, Philipp Nicolai, Jean Arndt, Johann Gerhard, Heinrich Müller et Philippe Jacques Spener) et leur rapport avec les traditions mystiques.

17th-century Lutheranism has taken up certain medieval mystical traditions, and various interpretations of this fact have been suggested. The first part of this paper proposes some explications, to wit, the re-edition of medieval mystical authors in the 16th century, including the Lutheran area ; a crisis of piety in Lutheranism at the end of the 16th century ; particular predispositions of Lutheranism for mysticism. The second part presents the reasoning of some key authors (Martin Moller, Philipp Nicolai, Johann Arndt, Johann Gerhard, Heinrich Müller, and Philipp Jakob Spener) and their relationship with mystical traditions.

Le déclin des études bibliques au dix-huitième siècle demeure énigmatique. L’explication d’Ernest Renan, constamment reprise par la suite, ne semble plus satisfaisante. Le rôle joué par Bossuet a sans doute été exagéré. La stagnation du mouvement critique, suite à un remarquable essor, a d’autres causes : parmi celles-ci, certaines failles logiques dans l’œuvre de son principal promoteur, Richard Simon, qui lui soutirait une part de sa crédibilité. L’hypothèse des écrivains publics illustre l’incapacité de Simon à proposer un nouveau paradigme de composition des livres sacrés susceptible de remplacer l’ancien.

According to Ernest Renan, Bossuet was responsible for the decline of biblical studies in the eighteenth century. This explanation, often repeated, is not satisfactory any more. The impact of Bossuet’s actions has probably been exaggerated. The stagnation of Bible scholarship has other causes ; among them, some logical weaknesses in the work of its main promoter, Richard Simon. The hypothesis of the public scribes illustrates Simon’s incapacity to propose a new paradigm that explains the composition of the Bible.

Est-il possible de jeter quelque lumière sur le sens (éthique) de l’existence à partir d’une réflexion sur la sexualité et la procréation humaines ? C’est en tout cas ce que tente E. Levinas en discernant dans les relations familiales l’envoi d’une vie vouée d’emblée au sans retour de la responsabilité. Allant « au-delà du possible » de chacun, la fécondité ouvre le temps infini et discontinu des générations, elle se produit comme « avenir innombrable » du Désir « engendrant le Désir ». À travers cette multiplication des uniques peut sans doute se donner à éprouver – et à penser – l’être hors de soi de la créature.

Is it possible to throw some light on the (ethical) sense of existence from a reflection on human sexuality and procreation ? In any case, that is what E. Levinas tries when he notes that in family relationships the beginning of life immediately gives rise to irrevocable responsibility. By transcending each person’s possibilities, fertility opens up the infinite and discontinuous time of the generations, and appears as the « endless future » of Desire « generating Desire ». Through this multiplication of unique persons the created being that is beyond itself can undoubtedly devote itself to experience and reflection.
