Le présent article plaide pour une compréhension littérale de la double expression « (Garde-moi) comme un petit homme, une fille d’œil » en Psaume 17,8a. La « fille d’œil » étant, du point de vue grammatical, une apposition à « petit homme », elle donne accès à un phénomène bien connu sur le plan historique et culturel : l’image pupilline. Quoiqu’elle soit bien attestée et vérifiable par chacun, cette image pupilline est aujourd’hui presque complètement oubliée, d’autant que le mot « pupille » est utilisé presque exclusivement comme terme anatomique et ophtalmologique et ne l’est plus que rarement dans son sens figuré. La redécouverte de l’image pupilline rend au Psaume 17 un aspect important de son système de référence et lui confère une nuance théologique surprenante : l’orant et le Seigneur se trouvent face à face…

The present article advocates a literal understanding of the phrase « (Keep me) as a little man, an eye’s daughter » in Psalm 17,8a. The expression « eye’s daughter », grammatically speaking an apposition to « little man », is connected to a cultural-historically well known phenomenon which in French is called « image pupilline ». Although broadly attested and easy to verify, this « image pupilline » has been almost completely forgotten, while « pupil » has become an anatomical and ophthalmological term, occasionally also used in a figurative sense. The rediscovery of the « image pupilline » in Psalm 17 restores an important aspect of the referential system and a highly significant theological nuance. Une stèle découverte près de la mer Morte porte un texte inédit écrit à l’encre. Celui-ci a été publié en 2007 ; apparenté à une vision apocalyptique de l’ange Gabriel, il décrit la fin ultime des temps, le rôle du messie davidique et une guerre eschatologique avec sept chars divins. Hors de tout contexte archéologique et sans localisation précise, le texte ne manquera pas de susciter des débats sur son authenticité. L’hypothèse de sa copie au tournant de notre ère est ici retenue.

David Hamidovic, Gabriel’s Vision

A stele discovered near the Dead Sea bears a new text written with ink. It has been published in 2007 and relates an apocalyptical vision of the angel Gabriel on the end of times, the role of the Davidic Messiah and an eschatological war with seven divine chariots. Since the archeological context and site are unknown, the text will certainly give rise to debates on its authenticity. We hypothesize that it is a copy made around the beginning of our era.

À la lumière du targum d’Ex 25,22 et de la symbolique rattachée au corps de Jésus dans le quatrième évangile, les deux anges, sis de part et d’autre du tombeau ouvert pourraient signaler, en Jn 20,12, la présence mystérieuse du Logos, du Seigneur : pour être ailleurs que dans le tombeau vide, il est cependant, désormais et à jamais, le véritable sanctuaire.

In the light of the targum of Ex 25,22 and of the symbolism connected with Jesus’ body in the fourth Gospel, the two angels, located on either side of the opened tomb, could indicate, in Jn 20,12, the mysterious presence of the Logos : to be somewhere else than in the empty tomb, he is nonetheless, henceforth and for ever, the true sanctuary.

Dans Les Recherches de la France, ordonnées à la grandeur puis à la reconstruction du Royaume, Étienne Pasquier s’intéresse au terme « universel ». Dans le livre I, rédigé en 1560, à l’heure de la naissance des nationalismes et de la postulation à l’Empire universel, il lui donne un sens politique lié au prestige militaire et moral accordé aux ancêtres gaulois. Dans le livre III, imprimé en 1596 mais commencé en 1565, il en retrace l’histoire dans le contexte ecclésiastique. À la lumière d’une actualité déchirée par les troubles, il montre l’émergence d’un autre terme, « œcuménique », pour satisfaire à un ordre considéré comme une priorité religieuse et civile. Il s’indigne du césaropapisme byzantin et souligne l’importance de la préséance et de la primauté de l’Église de Rome pour l’unité du christianisme occidental.

Edith Karagiannis-Mazeaud, « Universal » and « Ecumenical » in the 16^th Century. Two Epithets Successively Applied to the Politics of Expansion of France and to Greek Orthodoxy by Étienne Pasquier

In Les Recherches de la France, that were devoted to the greatness and the reconstruction of the French Kingdom, Étienne Pasquier pays attention to the term « universal ». In book I, written in 1560 during the emergence of nationalism and the striving for a universal Empire, he uses it in a political sense related to the military and moral prestige attributed to the Gallic ancestors. In book III, printed in 1596 but started in 1565, he investigates its history in the ecclesiastical context. In the light of the troublesome schism of that time he points at the emergence of another term, « ecumenical », to meet an order that was considered a religious and civil priority. He is indignant about Byzantine cesaropapism and underlines the importance of the precedence and primacy of the Roman Church for the unity of Western Christianity.
